Marine biologists have, for the first time, found a whale skeleton on the ocean floor near Antarctica, giving new insights into life in the sea depths. The discovery was made almost a mile below the surface in an undersea crater and includes the find of at least nine new species of deep-sea organisms thriving on the bones.
The research, involving the University of Southampton, Natural History Museum, British Antarctic Survey, National Oceanography Centre (NOC) and Oxford University, is published today in Deep-Sea Research II: Topical Studies in Oceanography.
"The planet's largest animals are also a part of the ecology of the very deep ocean, providing a rich habitat of food and shelter for deep sea animals for many years after their death," says Diva Amon, lead author of the paper based at University of Southampton Ocean and Earth Science (which is based at NOC) and the Natural History Museum. "Examining the remains of this southern Minke whale gives insight into how nutrients are recycled in the ocean, which may be a globally important process in our oceans."
Worldwide, only six natural whale skeletons have ever been found on the seafloor. Scientists have previously studied whale carcasses, known as a 'whale fall', by sinking bones and whole carcasses. Despite large populations of whales in the Antarctic, whale falls have not been studied in this region until now.
"At the moment, the only way to find a whale fall is to navigate right over one with an underwater vehicle," says co-author Dr Jon Copley of University of Southampton Ocean and Earth Science. Exploring an undersea crater near the South Sandwich Islands gave scientists just that chance encounter. "We were just finishing a dive with the UK's remotely operated vehicle, Isis, when we glimpsed a row of pale-coloured blocks in the distance, which turned out to be whale vertebrae on the seabed," continues Dr Copley.
When a whale dies and sinks to the ocean floor, scavengers quickly strip its flesh. Over time, other organisms then colonise the skeleton and gradually use up its remaining nutrients. Bacteria break down the fats stored in whale bones, for example, and in turn provide food for other marine life. Other animals commonly known as zombie worms can also digest whale bone.
"One of the great remaining mysteries of deep ocean biology is how these tiny invertebrates can spread between the isolated habitats these whale carcasses provide on the seafloor," says co-author Dr Adrian Glover at the Natural History Museum. 'Our discovery fills important gaps in this knowledge.'
The team surveyed the whale skeleton using high-definition cameras to examine the deep-sea animals living on the bones and collected samples to analyse ashore. Researchers think that the skeleton may have been on the seafloor for several decades. Samples also revealed several new species of deep-sea creatures thriving on the whale's remains, including a 'bone-eating zombie worm' known as Osedax burrowing into the bones and a new species of isopod crustacean, similar to woodlice, crawling over the skeleton. There were also limpets identical to those living at nearby deep-sea volcanic vents.

US Supreme Court on Monday heard a case about an Arizona law requiring prospective voters to show papers proving they are US citizens. Federal law requires only an oath under penalty of perjury. Can a state tack on that extra provision?

A sharply divided US Supreme Court heard arguments Monday in a case examining whether Arizona can require residents to present proof of US citizenship before being allowed to register to vote.

At issue is a measure adopted by statewide ballot in 2004, Proposition 200, that requires applicants for voter registration to present documentation proving their citizenship.?Acceptable proof includes a driver's license, a naturalization ID number, or a photocopy of a birth certificate, passport, or naturalization document.
Critics of the measure say it erects a barrier to potential voters. More specifically, they say the state law clashes with the more limited demands of the federal voter registration law.
The National Voter Registration Act (NVRA) requires only that an applicant to register to vote affirm his or her US citizenship under penalty of perjury.?Congress did not require applicants to present documentary proof of citizenship. But Congress also did not explicitly bar states from seeking additional proof of citizenship while registering potential voters, according to Arizona.
The central question before the high court is whether Congress preempted state government in passing the NVRA, or whether states like Arizona are free to include additional requirements to prove citizenship during the process of registering new voters.
The case, Arizona v. Inter Tribal Council of Arizona (12-71), marks the second time in a year that the high court is considering whether a tough Arizona law dealing with immigrants is preempted by more lenient federal law.?Last June, the court struck down a portion of Arizona?s effort to enforce its own tough immigration law ? SB 1070 ? in response to lax federal efforts to police the border.
President Obama used the case during his reelection bid to appeal for Latino votes by stressing that Republican lawmakers in Arizona and elsewhere were working to disenfranchise minority voters. It is an argument that apparently resonated, with the president winning more than 70 percent of the Latino vote.
Politics was not discussed during the hour-long argument session at the high court. But the apparent split among the justices mirrored a similar split in perspective between Democrats and Republicans.
Justices Sonia Sotomayor, Elena Kagan, and Ruth Bader Ginsburg ? appointees of Democratic presidents ? were sharply critical of Arizona?s attempt to require documented proof of US citizenship before allowing someone to register to vote.
?If I see the purpose of the [National Voter Registration Act] to simplify registration, how is Arizona?s provision consistent with that objective and purpose?? Justice Sotomayor asked.
?Simplifying the procedure is one of two important purposes of the NVRA,? Arizona Attorney General Thomas Horne replied. ?The other is the integrity of the system.?
Justices Antonin Scalia and Samuel Alito ? appointees of Republican presidents ? were generally supportive of Arizona?s effort to prevent fraudulent registrations by those ineligible to vote.
The federal voter registration form established under the NVRA asks applicants to declare under penalty of perjury whether they are US citizens eligible to vote. No other proof of eligibility is required.
Arizona officials believe the federal provision is not an effective safeguard against fraud. Attorney General Horne said it is the duty of the states to determine if a voter is, in fact, a US citizen and thus eligible to vote.
?But this [federal] form has to enable the state to do that,? Justice Scalia said. Having an applicant check a citizenship box under oath to tell the truth on a registration form is not enough, he said.
?So it?s under oath. Big deal,? Scalia said. ?If you?re willing to violate the voting laws, I suppose you?re willing to violate the perjury laws.?
Horne said Arizona had found ?hundreds? of individuals who swore on voter registration applications they were US citizens ? and voted ? but later denied citizenship when filling out jury duty forms.
He said 10 individuals had been prosecuted in a single year for perjury on their voter registration forms.
In contrast, Horne told the justices, lawyers challenging the state?s effort had been able to locate only one US citizen, out of?6 million Arizonans,?who was unable to present a document required by Arizona.
Horne said the federal form with its checkbox for citizenship leaves Arizona unable to verify which applicants are citizens and which aren?t.??It?s essentially an honor system,? he said. ?It does not do the job.?
Sotomayor responded: ?Well, that?s what the federal system decided was enough.?
Horne disagreed. ?That?s what they decided as a minimum in the federal form, but they did not say that we [the state] could not ask for additional information.?
Patricia Millett, representing those challenging the Arizona measure, said the National Voter Registration Act was an attempt by Congress to strike a balance and eliminate barriers that had prevented 40 percent of eligible voters from registering.
She said that in Arizona, 31,550 individuals were blocked from registering by the state's law. Some 11,000 of them were subsequently able to register, but 20,000 have not, she said.
US Deputy Solicitor General Sri Srinivasan told the justices that Congress passed the NVRA with the aim to streamline voter registration nationwide. He said it is up to a federal commission, not individual states, to decide the content of the federal voter registration form.
Mr. Srinivasan said Congress limited the role of states in the process. They are able to consult with the federal commission about the requirements and content of the registration form, but they are not empowered to add their own requirements to it.

series "The Walking Dead," humans struggle to escape from a pack of
zombies hungry for flesh. Prank alerts have warned of a zombie
apocalypse on radio stations in a handful of states. And across the
country, zombie wannabes in tattered clothes occasionally fill local
parks, gurgling moans of the undead.
Are these just unhealthy
obsessions with death and decay? To Clemson University professor Sarah
Lauro, the phenomenon isn't harmful or a random fad, but part of a
historical trend that mirrors a level of cultural dissatisfaction and
economic upheaval.
Lauro, who teaches English at Clemson, studied
zombies while working on her doctoral degree at the University of
California at Davis. Lauro said she keeps track of zombie movies,
television shows and video games, but her research focuses primarily on
the concept of the "zombie walk," a mass gathering of people who,
dressed in the clothes and makeup of the undead, stagger about and
dance.
It's a fascination that, for Lauro, a self-described "chicken," seems unnatural. Disinterested in violent movies
or games, Lauro said she finds herself now taking part in both in an
attempt to further understand what makes zombie-lovers tick.
"I hate violence," she said. "I can't stand gore. So it's a labor, but I do it."
The
zombie mob originated in 2003 in Toronto, Lauro said, and popularity
escalated dramatically in the United States in 2005, alongside a rise in
dissatisfaction with the war in Iraq.
"It was a way that the
population was getting to exercise the fact that they felt like they
hadn't been listened to by the Bush administration," Lauro said. "Nobody
really wanted that war, and yet we were going to war anyway."
The
mid- to late 2000s also saw an uptick in overall zombie popularity,
perhaps prompted in part by the release of post-apocalyptic movies including "Dawn of the Dead" and "28 Days Later."
As
of last year, Lauro said, zombie walks had been documented in 20
countries. The largest gathering drew more than 4,000 participants at
the New Jersey Zombie Walk in Asbury Park, N.J., in October 2010,
according to Guinness World Records.
"We are more interested in
the zombie at times when as a culture we feel disempowered," Lauro said.
"And the facts are there that, when we are experiencing economic
crises, the vast population is feeling disempowered. ... Either playing
dead themselves ... or watching a show like 'Walking Dead' provides a
great variety of outlets for people."
But, Lauro pointed out, the display of dissatisfaction isn't always a conscious expression of that feeling of frustration.
If you were to ask the participants, I don't think that all of them are
very cognizant of what they're saying when they put on the zombie makeup
and participate," she said. "To me, it's such an obvious allegory. We
feel like, in one way, we're dead."

While Foursquare has been concentrating on smartphones for some year now, much of the rest of the world has remained on a feature phone (though that of course is changing). So the opportunity to do location-based services has been limited - though not impossible. It has always been possible to triangulate a phones' rough location based on the nearest three base stations using. So taking that idea, last year a new startup called hoppr launched in India, offering real benefits to people who could simply SMS to check in their location and gain benefits with local retailers. That simple strategy has lead to the point today where, after only six months in full operation, hoppr has garnered over three million registrations and over a million monthly active users.
WASHINGTON (AP) ? Osama bin Laden's spokesman and son-in-law has been captured by U.S. intelligence officials, a senior congressman said Thursday, calling it a "very significant victory" in the ongoing fight against al-Qaida.
Rep. Peter King, the former chairman of the House Homeland Security Committee, credited the CIA and FBI with catching Sulaiman Abu Ghaith in Jordan within the last week. He said the capture was confirmed to him by U.S. law enforcement officials.
King, R-N.Y., said Ghaith took part in the Sept. 11, 2001, plot against the World Trade Center and Pentagon.
"Definitely, one by one, we are getting the top echelons of al-Qaida," King said Thursday. "I give the (Obama) administration credit for this: it's steady and it's unrelenting and it's very successful."
The Turkish newspaper H?rriyet reported that Ghaith was passing through Jordan, on his way to Kuwait, shortly after leaving Turkey.
The newspaper said that Ghaith was taken into custody more than a month ago at a luxury hotel in in Ankara, the Turkish capital. But Turkish officials decided he had not committed any crime in Turkey, and released him, the newspaper reported.
In Ankara, Turkish officials refused to confirm Ghaith's deportation or his capture in Jordan to The Associated Press. In Amman, the Jordanian capital, a security official said he had no information on the CIA arrest in Jordan.
U.S. intelligence officials in Washington did not immediately respond to request for information about Ghaith.

NEW YORK ? Hess Corp. here on Monday said it would seek to sell all of its gas stations and convenience stores so it can focus exclusively on energy exploration and production.
The company, based here, operates 1,350 gas stations on the East Coast serving 1.3 million customers a day. Many locations include Hess Express convenience stores or co-branded fast food franchises such as Dunkin' Donuts.
The company in a release said it hoped to complete divestitures by the end of 2014.
A joint investigation involving Indianapolis Animal Care & Control (IACC) and the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department resulted in charges against a man accused of ?dog flipping.?
According to investigators, it works much like house flipping. A person acquires a dog and then tries to sell the pet at a higher price to make a profit. According to IACC, there are no laws regulating the practice in regards to pets. In many cases, the pets live in puppy mill-like conditions with no food or water. Animals that can?t be sold for a profit are then dumped to fend for themselves. Many dog flippers use Craigslist to find their targets.
The investigation started in January when a couple contacted authorities to report that their dog, a German Shepherd named Ceazer, had been stolen in a Craigslist scam.
According to investigators, an Indianapolis man named Johnny Jones, Jr., was an expert at it. For years, they said, he?s acquired dogs by searching for owners on Craigslist. Jones looked for people who were down on their luck and needed to part ways with their pets for one reason or another. He specifically looked for German Shepherds, Rottweilers, Pit Bulls and other purebred, unaltered breeds.
In a recent case, investigators said Jones contacted a woman who needed to give up her German Shepherd. To gain her trust, Jones talked to her, told her his dog had died and spent an hour getting to know the dog. After he bought the dog, Jones posted the German Shepherd on Craigslist with his phone number. The former owner saw the ad two days later. After that, the woman found the dog on eBay Classifieds with a different phone number.
Investigators said Jones also ran a dog obedience and ?personal protection? training facility in his living room. They believe he bred dogs from his clients? purebred dogs without their knowledge or consent and profited from selling the resulting litters.
Since the investigation began, IACC has received several reports of stolen dogs. One victim bought back a purebred puppy after seeing it on Craigslist and immediately had the dog micro-chipped.
As for Ceazer?the dog whose disappearance sparked the investigation?Jones ended up dumping him before investigators closed in. Someone found Ceazer, had his microchip analyzed and made arrangements with his owner to have him returned.
Investigators served an arrest warrant at Jones? east side home in February, recovering firearms and four dogs, including two purebred German Shepherds. He?s charged with theft and being a serious violent felon in possession of firearms.
Feb. 28, 2013 ? Forest-living insects and spiders become less abundant and birds are adversely affected along regulated rivers. Three different studies by ecologists at Ume? University in Sweden show that river regulation has a negative effect also on land-living animals.
It is already well known that river regulation influences salmon migration, aquatic insects and streamside vegetation, but effects on land-living animals have been poorly studied.
When free-flowing rivers become regulated, there is a reduction in the number of aquatic insects that, during spring and summer, emerge and fly onto land where they become food for land-living animals.
"Our studies show that the number of flying insects is lower along regulated rivers than along free-flowing rivers. This results in fewer forest-living insects and spiders along regulated rivers, as the resource they feed upon -- emergent aquatic insects -- is reduced," says ecologist Micael Jonsson, the lead author on two of the articles.
Together with a group of researchers, he has compared the abundance of insect-feeding animals along similar river stretches at four regulated and four free-flowing large rivers in northern Sweden and the Finnish Kemi River. Along these rivers, flying and ground-dwelling insects were caught. The flying insects were caught with a net mounted on the top of a moving car, and the ground-dwelling insects and spiders were caught in pitfall traps.
The research team also shows that birds are adversely affected by river regulation. Besides a standardised bird survey, nest boxes were used to investigate breeding success of insectivorous birds. The study species, the Pied Flycatcher, is a relatively common species and prefers to use nest boxes.
The results show that adult Pied Flycatchers breeding along regulated rivers lost more weight after their eggs were hatched and fewer of the chicks survived, because their food resource -- the insects -- was less abundant. Along one of the regulated rivers, the survival of the chicks was even lower than what is required for the species to persist.
There were also signs of whole bird communities being impacted by river regulation. Aquatic insect emerge and fly onto land before terrestrial insects peak in numbers. The aquatic insects are therefore an important food resource for birds early in the season, while, normally, birds are seen foraging away from aquatic systems later in the season.
"We could see that such seasonal movements of whole bird communities differed between regulated and free-flowing rivers," says Micael Jonsson.
That the effects are still visible half a century after regulation of these rivers was initiated clearly indicates that the changes are permanent. The studies also highlight the fact that different types of ecosystems influence each other via resource flows, and that changes in one ecosystem therefore affect plant and animals in nearby ecosystems.
"Therefore, there are even stronger reasons to question the use of biological insecticides to reduce the numbers of mosquitoes along rivers in central Sweden and elsewhere in the world, because it most likely results in poorer living conditions for a range of land-living animals."
The studies are published in the international journals River Research and Applications, Ibis, and Ecological Research.

Mar. 1, 2013 ? A new University of Iowa study confirms what many women have long suspected -- that pregnancy permanently changes the size and shape of a woman's feet.
Flat feet are a common problem for pregnant women. The arch of the foot flattens out, possibly due to the extra weight and increased looseness (laxity) of the joints associated with pregnancy. The new study, published in the March issue of the American Journal of Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation, suggests that this loss of arch height is permanent.
"I had heard women reporting changes in their shoe size with pregnancy, but found nothing about that in medical journals or textbooks," says Neil Segal, M.D., UI associate professor of orthopaedics and rehabilitation. "In order to study this more scientifically, we measured women's feet at the beginning of their pregnancy and five months after delivery. We found that pregnancy does indeed lead to permanent changes in the feet."
The UI study followed 49 pregnant women and collected static and dynamic arch measurements during the first trimester of pregnancy and again about five months after childbirth. The researchers found that for about 60 to 70 percent of the women in the study, their feet became longer and wider.
Specifically, the study showed that, on average, arch height and measures of arch rigidity decreased significantly comparing early pregnancy with five months after childbirth, causing corresponding increases in foot length (between 2 and 10 mm) and arch drop. However, no significant change in the distribution of foot pressure was detected. The study also suggested that first pregnancies may account for most of the observed changes, while second, third, or higher pregnancies may not further alter foot structure.
"We know that women, and especially women who have had children, are disproportionately affected by musculoskeletal disorders," says Segal, who also is an associate professor of radiology and epidemiology, and director of the Clinical Osteoarthritis Research Program. "It is possible that these foot changes that occur during pregnancy may help explain why, in comparison with men, women are at higher risk for pain or arthritis in their feet, knees, hips and spines."
Segal plans to conduct follow-up studies to assess whether these foot changes lead to health problems, like arthritis, later in life. He also is conducting studies of how women's musculoskeletal health can be protected during pregnancy.
